WORK WITH ME
Speaking & Consulting on China’s Digital Culture
Manya Koetse is a sinologist, founder of What’s on Weibo and writer of the Eye on Digital China newsletter | Speaker, researcher & consultant on Chinese social media, digital culture, and online trends
I am a sinologist and analyst specializing in China’s digital culture, Chinese social media, and online trends.
I work with media organizations, companies, and institutions to better understand China’s fast-changing online ecosystem, from platforms like Weibo, Douyin, and Xiaohongshu to broader developments in AI, digital culture, and public discourse.
I also work directly with brands, agencies, and strategy teams, helping them get up to speed on what’s happening in China — from key online narratives to shifts in media, platforms, and consumer culture.
🔍 Focus Topics & Expertise
My work focuses on Chinese social media platforms and online ecosystems, media innovation, and more:
• Chinese social media platforms and online ecosystems
• China’s digital culture and public discourse
• Media innovation and AI developments
• Political communication in China
• Soft power and pop culture
• Youth trends and demographic shifts
Drawing on over 12 years of research and daily trend tracking on Chinese social media, I approach these themes from a sinological perspective, explaining not only how developments in China differ, but especially why — and what we can learn from them.

🎤 Consulting, Briefings & Workshops
I have extensive experience speaking to audiences ranging from large conferences to small boardrooms, working with both brands and institutions.
Recent engagements include sessions with the Dutch national broadcaster on China’s media convergence, and with the diplomatic community in Beijing, hosted by the Dutch Embassy, on the evolution and power of Chinese social media. I was also invited by the European Union Delegation to China to speak on foreign-facing public diplomacy strategies and changing censorship dynamics, and contributed to the latest ReConnect China event on China’s evolving political narratives.
I also contribute to international media, including CNN, on topics such as youth trends in China.
In addition to keynote talks, I provide tailored briefings, workshops, and consulting sessions for editorial teams, digital agencies, investment firms, and other organizations seeking a deeper understanding of China’s online media environment. Upon request, I can go deeper into specific areas, such as Chinese innovation in healthcare for hospital executives, or the transition from traditional to new media for editorial teams.
